Over-ear headphones are the easiest Bluetooth device to find, and it is worth knowing why before you start looking. Their batteries are large enough to keep them broadcasting for days after you lost them, their antennas are bigger than an earbud’s so they can be detected from further away, and they are too large to vanish into a sofa seam. Start by scanning, not by searching
The instinct is to start turning the house over. Scan first — it takes a minute and it either narrows the search to one room or tells you the battery is flat, and those are two completely different afternoons.

Indoor range is roughly 10 to 30 feet through walls and furniture. Scanning from the kitchen proves nothing about the bedroom.

Check whether they are simply connected to something else
This is the single most common answer for headphones specifically. A laptop, tablet or television that has them paired will hold the connection silently, and the headphones will be sitting exactly where you left them near that device.

If they appear, walk the signal up

Once in range, play something at volume. Over-ear headphones are loud enough to hear through a closed drawer or a bag, which makes this the fastest ending to the search.

Where headphones actually end up

No signal after scanning properly in the right room means one of three things: they are out of range, the battery finally went flat, or the model powered itself off after a long idle period. Some headphones do the last one deliberately to preserve charge, which ends detection even though the battery is fine.
From here, work from data rather than memory. Check the manufacturer’s app — Sony, Bose, Sennheiser, Jabra and others record where the headphones last disconnected from your phone, which is often enough to name the room or the building.
