What a Bluetooth finder can and cannot do
Every Bluetooth Low Energy device announces itself several times a second with a small packet called an advertisement. Your phone can hear those packets from any device in range without pairing with it, and it can measure how strongly each one arrives. That measurement — RSSI, in decibel-milliwatts — is the entire basis of Bluetooth finding. Everything a finder does is built from it.

The method: walk the signal, do not read the number
The mistake almost everyone makes is treating the distance estimate as a measurement. It is not. A reading of “about 4 feet” means the signal is as strong as a clear 4-foot path would be — and a cushion, a body or a closed drawer between you and the device will each cost you several feet of apparent distance. Read the trend instead of the number, and the inaccuracy stops mattering.

Stand still and let the reading settle
Signal strength fluctuates by several decibels even when nothing moves. Give it five to ten seconds so you know your true baseline rather than chasing noise.

Walk about ten feet in one direction, slowly
Slowly matters: scans update a few times per second, and walking fast means you cross the room before the numbers catch up.

Compare, then commit or reverse
Stronger means keep going. Weaker means turn around and try a different axis. You are using your own movement as the direction sensor that a single antenna cannot provide.

Close in, then sweep low and slow
Once the signal is strong, sweep the phone near surfaces — under cushions, along the back of the sofa, into bags. Small objects end up low and inside things far more often than they end up in the open.

Make it make a sound
The instant you can connect, play audio at full volume. Your ears localise sound far better than any radio can, and this is what finally converts “somewhere in this room” into “here”.

Devices this works well for
Bluetooth finding is most valuable for the enormous category of devices that have no tracking network of their own. AirPods and AirTags are well covered by Apple’s Find My, and Galaxy Buds by Samsung’s SmartThings Find. Almost everything else is on its own:
- Third-party earbuds and headphones — Sony, Bose, JBL, Anker, Jabra, Beats when not paired to an Apple ID, and the entire budget market
- Portable speakers left in a garden, a car, or somebody else’s house
- Fitness bands and older smartwatches without their own finder
- Bluetooth keyboards, mice, styluses and game controllers
- Tile, Chipolo and other trackers you would rather scan for directly
Before you start looking
Two minutes of preparation regularly saves an hour of searching. Check the last place the device was connected to your phone, because that is a real data point rather than a memory. Then narrow the search to one room before you start scanning — a finder that reports nothing tells you very little if you are not sure which building the device is in.

Bluetooth finder FAQ
Can a Bluetooth finder find a device that is switched off?
No. A powered-off device transmits nothing, and a finder can only detect what is being transmitted. What a finder can do is tell you the moment a device comes back into range, and show you where it was last picked up. Most devices people describe as "off" are actually idle or disconnected rather than powered down, and those are still detectable.
How close do I need to be for a Bluetooth finder to detect my device?
Indoors, expect roughly 10 to 30 feet through furniture and walls, and up to about 100 feet with a clear line of sight. Bluetooth Low Energy signals are absorbed heavily by water, bodies, plaster and metal, so a device under a sofa cushion or inside a car seat pocket will read much weaker than its true distance suggests.
Does a Bluetooth finder show the direction to walk in?
Not from a single reading. One phone antenna measures strength, not bearing, so there is no arrow to follow unless the device supports ultra-wideband precision finding. The reliable technique is to walk slowly and watch whether the signal climbs or falls, which turns your movement into the direction sensor.
Do I need to have paired the device beforehand?
No. Bluetooth Low Energy devices broadcast advertising packets to any listener nearby, whether or not they have ever been paired with your phone. Pairing matters for connecting and playing audio, not for being seen in a scan.
Will a Bluetooth finder work for AirTags and other trackers?
It can detect them when they are in range, but for an AirTag you should use Apple’s Find My app first, because AirTags can also be located far away through the Find My crowd network. A general Bluetooth finder is most useful for the many devices that have no crowd network of their own, such as most earbuds, speakers, keyboards and fitness bands.
